the best way i have found for brightening up video clip's is by using the "level" filter on virtualdub. It give a good preview shot, and have sliders for the best result. You can then edit out the black surroun'ds on the video aswell.

PS, virtualdub does not work with WMV file extention's, so i first convert to avi using MPEG4 direct maker.
