When I was in high school, around 1978–79, I was talking with a group of five girls. One of them mentioned a girl from her gym class who shaved her pubic hair, adding that she saw it every day. All five girls immediately exclaimed, “EEWWWW!” in unison, as if the idea was disgusting. For the next five minutes, they talked as though shaving was a terrible thing to do and that the girl who did it was a bad person. Keep in mind, these were high school girls.
Fast forward to 2020, when I was hosting at a swingers club. Almost every weekend, I saw at least 25 to 50 naked women in various states of undress. It was extremely rare to see a woman with pubic hair. Then I found myself in another group of five women and me. The age range of these women was 35-45. I mentioned that it looked like pubic hair was coming back into style, since that’s what college girls were doing. All five said, “EEWWWW!” in unison, as if not shaving was disgusting. They all acted as though a woman who doesn’t shave is gross and a horrible person. For the next five minutes, they carried on as if having pubic hair made someone awful.
