That sounds familiar.
Even though my wife and I have been going to our resort for years - and she will spend the entire day completely naked there, tanning, hiking, paddle-boarding and socializing - she will still not refer to herself as a "nudist." When asked, she will say stuff like "Oh...I'm just here because my husband is a nudist." Plausible deniability. Other nudists have been perplexed by her statement; because she'll literally be standing naked in front of them, with no apparent discomfort, as she says it.
It has a lot to do with her conservative upbringing. To her, admitting she's a nudist would be akin to admitting she has a kink. It goes against the values instilled in her from childhood; and her self-image. So she'll probably go on saying: "I'm only naked here because that's what YOU want to do!" while clearly enjoying being completely naked. Oh well...
