Thank you Zonk. It's always nice to first hand experiences from actual women who have been through it.
My ex-wife was one of the first women to go bald at our resort. She was well aware of older women's negative feelings about it as being "scandalous." Her decision to go bald anyway was both a rejection of these "antiquated values" (she was in her 20's back then); but also a little "low-key" exhibitionism, as she knew very well how much she would stand out with a visible vulva. She went directly from hairy to bald; so there was no way people wouldn't notice the "change."
The "feedback" was actually fairly positive; especially from the men who appreciated the "visual." The other younger women seemed impressed by the lack of inhibition. We never heard anything from the "old guard"; so if they said anything, it must have been behind our backs.
Today, it seems the pendulum has completely swung the other way. At my resort today, the only pubes you're going to see is a small patch above the vulva. So women with full pubes are the ones now more likely to stand out. Whereas "back in the day" going bald was making a "statement", it is now "keeping the pubes" that is making a statement about non-conformity.
It's funny how things change.
