is geographically between east and west and that has been both an advantage and a curse. The Mongols invaded from the east and later the Muslims invaded from the west. Alexander the Great also invaded from the west but he was defeated by Indians mounted on elephants. The Bristish Raj was actually pretty bloodless. In WWII Imperial Japan invaded India but failed in their attempt at conquest.
Arthur Wellesley, the future Duke of Wellington spent his early military career in India and later went on to defeat Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo.
The most brutal invaders were the Muslims.

In 1947 India was partitioned into Hindu India and Muslim Pakistan/Bangledesh and the Brits left.
