I remember this topic coming up back in the 90's, before smoothness "took off." The "older ladies" derogatorily referred to the bald look as "prepubescent" ("why would anyone want to look like a 10 year-old girl?) and even "exhibitionistic." As shower mentioned, they grew up believing that the vulva was "unsightly" or "triggering the male gaze"; and should remain covered in hair, of hidden. The idea of it being clearly visible was unimaginable to many of them.
My then-wife, who was a bit of a rebel anyway, decided to go bald anyway to "make a statement." She was, at least at the beginning, one of the first to do so at our resort.
What it ended up doing is allowing nudist women to accept - and even embrace - their individual uniqueness. From "innies" (aka "coin-slot" pussies) to "outies" (visible labia); more female nudists are comfortable with it than ever before.
Personally, I feel that "outies" have more "personality", so to speak. My wife is one; so maybe I'm a little biased.
