when ever you encode a video, you need to compress with codec, and usually adjust the settings accordingly.
I usually always use divx for .avi but if your converting to .wmv,, there's quality settings which you can choose from. Also check that the sound is compressed. mpeg layer3 is good and you can change the setting for compression on that aswell.
