Had you done that with my phone the mails you sent would still be on my server, only my PC is configured to wipe those. I would generally advise to take pictures of the screen with a second phone. Any copying or transferring of pictures does leave traces. Even if they find out you saw them, that is still better than them finding out you stole them.

He emailed using his own account (web based) in a private browser tab. He's golden, the mail never touched anyone elses server.
