A friend (in a couple) would regularly refer to going topless on holiday. This was mid 00s when topless was still fairly common. On one occasion she showed me beach pics from their recent holiday. We'd get home from holiday and, on a sunny day at her house, she'd strip off to sunbathe in the garden. Another time, she needs to change her clothes so strips to her underwear, forgetting or not caring that the bottoms are a thong (unlike bikinis back then) and very sheer. Basically, it would just become totally normal so see her topless or in underwear.

This makes me so sad this story. Particularly the "This was mid 00s when topless was still fairly common." You are right, it's not common at all these days. I too, like you, probably could have gone on a holiday with friends where my wife (then my girlfriend) got her tits out and my female friends followed her lead... if only I'd played it right. I would say it would only be truly perfect if, as I say, it was my missus AND the other girls there with their norks on show - I do think one without the other, either way, would make me feel a bit awkward.
There are three holidays I remember specifically I could have achieved my goal:
1. Friends' wedding in Spain. If we had shared a villa with a girl or two that I know she'd sunbathed topless with before (without us male partners around) I'm convinced we would have been treated to all their tits all week.
2. We went on holiday with another couple and our and their kids - kids were all very young at the time. The missus has always said she's grown up positive about her body and a bit of nudity as her mum was similarly partial to a bit of relaxed nudity and that included her mum and her mum's friends sunbathing topless on holiday (lucky b***ard fil and fil's freinds :-) ). Similarly I've told her that my mother was the same back in the 80s and 90s when topless sunbathing was pretty much compulsory. My wife feels it is a shame our kids will grow up without that confidence as topless sunbathing is just not the done think now. However there were quite a few locals on that holiday with their tits on show at the beach. And if the conversation had gone right perhaps it could have steered it to being about body positivity for the kids and the two wives would have got them out for that reason
3. Holiday with the in laws. As I said mil usually sunbathes nude when only family around, and certainly topless despite who is around. She only seemed to care to put a bikini top on on that holiday; for my bloody benefit! I'm sure if I had only dropped a few hints her baps would have been out. Imagine sitting next to my wife by the pool, and staring at her mum's tits!
So, my silly unrealistic fantasy is to invent a time machine and go back and talk some sense into me!
