Even when the police tried to rescue them, they were stopped by the shopkeepers, as they believe that the police have protected these women before when they were caught stealing.
These women were guarded by over 200 shopkeepers who said that they would not free them until they were assured that they would go to prison.

A few years ago, a similar thing happen in Peru. The women were kept nude in a fountain, and that was on video, because I saw it on the television on the news.
