I think a .png format image has simply been renamed with a .jpg extension. .jpg and .png formats have different internal formats and its internal format is being correctly recognized as .png and therefore rejected as a .png "in disguise".

To make coupleleak's suggestion more explicit - do the following:
open the image in eg Paint (if you are using Windows). Then File, Save As and make sure that you select JPEG.
