For the participants in these events I'm sure there is a difference between having pics posted from a public event and then having those images linked to their private and/or everyday lives. They can see all of the cameras at the event and certainly know these photos will be shared in various ways. But I doubt many of them anticipated people would then use software and other means to show photos of them at their work, with their friends, or even at their weddings.

A couple of years ago when the facial recognition sites became more accessible I also used them for this purpose. The allure is obvious and I shared many of my finds here on OCC. But the argument being made in this thread came up then as well and I agreed that the upside wasn't worth the potential downside. And that doesn't even count that it made me think more about whether it was appropriate to share those comparison pics like this in the first place. They signed up to be nude in public and knew they were being photographed but I imagine most would be dismayed to discover this had happened too.

As Laylak and Spanky have pointed out, doing this (especially in such a systematic way) can only dissuade someone from participating in the very thing we enjoy viewing.
