The nautical star is a symbol of protection and guidance.

Sailors would tattoo nautical stars on their forearms as a good luck symbol in hopes of returning home [1]. It is also a popular tattoo design used by punk rockers, soldiers, and others, mostly as a symbol for finding one's way through life.

At least three of the famous mutiny on the Bounty mutineers had a nautical star tattooed on their left breast. They are Fletcher Christian, James Morrison and the American Isaac Martin. Other mutineers are reported as being heavily tattooed.

I have some tattoos and really never saw the appeal of the star tattoo.... And so BIG on her breast bone, my God....
