It looks to me like a hack of an editing job.
In this era, with this type of slap stick humor, the pushy, wannabee starlet character that Langdon plays should have received her comeuppance by some sort of humiliating public exposure.
And while it looks like that's what happened, most of the scene never made it out of the editing room...unless there's a different cut of the film out there somewhere...
Something similar occurred in the Kirk Douglas film "There Was A Crooked Man" towards the end.
