Wide angle lens needed to fit everyone in when taking a photo in limited space. Less of an issue outdoor when you can take the pic from a further distance with a standard or tele lens.
It's the same effect on all these selfie photos these days, everyone's face is distorted.

It can be corrected to a degree it Photoshop or similar but you can start losing bits off the edge of the photo.
