My in-laws live next door, and we were great friends before even the thought of anything progressing with my now wife took place. They have a hot tub, and I've spent a lot of time over there, so seeing her in a bikini wasn't uncommon. She is actually my workout buddy, too... so we spend a lot of time together. I would honestly put her on my list as a close friend.

On a Friday night, we were together, and my future MIL asked what our plans were for the weekend, which was "going to the beach." Instantly my MIL said she wanted to go, and I suspect the look on our faces must have been priceless. Long story short, my wife broke the news to her mom privately, and other than being a little awkward, nothing more was said about the beach that weekend.

Fast forward, and my MIL started asking my wife a lot of questions about it (e.g., what was it like, any creepy people..). Eventually, she said she wanted to go, which my wife was not overly enthusiastic about. There were a few psychological things involved for her wanting to go (e.g., feeling left out, her daughter getting married, feeling old), and surprisingly my wife is the one that brought up her going with us.

I probably made it even more awkward, but I'm good friends with my FIL, so I didn't want it to be a secret. Once we worked all of that out, I got to see her naked at the beach. My MIL is in her late 40s, and I never thought I'd see her for hours nude. It seems like it was a one-a-done thing for her. I've not asked my wife if any behind-the-scenes agreement was made, but it seems possible.
