When I was small I always used to wear underwear with pyjamas, I guess my sister did too and I thought it was normal. So it was something of a revelation when we had other kids stay over with us that didn't. Nowadays (if Instagram is anything to go by) standard nightwear for girls is shorts and a loose t-shirt, but back then it was cotton nighties. And at that age, kids hadn't learned the required decorum for sitting modestly at all times. It was a renaissance in human anatomy for a curious child. Needless to say it wasn't long before I decided to forsake night-time underwear myself and join in the fun. I also stopped wearing pyjama bottoms that were just elastic pull-ups and insisted on open-fly style.
Many years later, I stayed with my aunt, uncle and teenage cousins, at least one of the cousins and a friend she had staying over wore t-shirt and panties as nightwear and had no problem walking around like that without a robe before going to bed or getting dressed in the morning. So I have very happy associations with pyjamas and nightwear.
