Everyone was a newbie once. Just go, have fun, introduce yourself to people. It can sometimes be clicky as some people will only hang out with those they know. A few weeks back we went to a meet and greet here in FL with over 300 people in attendance (it was outside at a bar on the water). Nobody, that I know of, got COVID. Lots of skin being shown, etc. It was only our 2nd meet and greet despite being in the LS for over 6yrs now. We had fun and met a few nice couples.
