Every year in January, schools of the very rare Blue Pygmy Dolphin (dolphinus plasticata australis) make their way up the Upper Kut River on Pha Phlung Island. Waiting for these poor creatures are a gang of school girls known as the Thong-On. These evil girls beat the dolphins with ceremonial poles called Thwakas. The dolphins are then skinned and the highly prized pelts sold to merchants in the Poo-Pong street markets. These skins are then used in the manufacture of floating pool furniture.
