I can't verify this, but I believe it has much to do with the fact that as we get older, men and women alike, tend to realize that other folks opinions really doesn't matter. We realize that we are depriving ourselves of basic pleasures of life that have no bearing on others who are not involved in the actual events just because society tells us that it's wrong and we're less of a person for doing or thinking what we do. Just my two cents worth based on 50+ years of observation.
