I think the reason is that a lot of 'old time' photos often have the man with his hunting rifle. From the wild west days, men were often armed in their photos. Some women too.
I think for this reason they are often used as props in todays 'old west' types of photos, and that has just trickled down into modern photos.
I don't particularly like the modern guns being used as props. It just doesn't look sexy to me.
