Good Morning Boys (1937)
This is going WAY back in the archives to 1937, with one of Britain's greatest stars, Will Hay. In the 1930's and early 40's his films were some of the best to ever come out of the UK, and Good Morning Boys (which this clip is from) was the start of a golden 6 year spell until ill health cut short his career in 1943. In this clip he plays a teacher who is looking to round up his (overage) pupils from a Paris nightclub they have absconded to. As he proceeds to round them up, he starts slapping the backsides of those on barstools, only to accidently slap the bottom of the delightful Lili Palmer (in one of her earliest roles). The dialogue alone is a joy, and a taste of what Hay's comedy was like. "I'm sorry. I didn't know it was yours!" says Hay. Lili's reply is perfect: "Oh, I bet you say that to all the girls." Ironically, Lili was upset at first at being contracted to this film as she wanted to be a serious actress, but they placated her by including a song for her to sing in the film, and it proved to be a star making role. Now as likely to be remembered for being the 2nd Mrs Rex Harrison as much as for her film work.
