Had an interesting experience at the marina yesterday. A little set up. I have a boat that spend the summers in a slip at a marina that has a variety of power boat type and sizes, ranging from express cruisers to trawlers to house boats, and from the mid 30 foot sizes to 65 feet. Each dock has slips on both sides, so that one has boats to both sides as well as facing your own boat.
Early in the day I noticed that a large houseboat that is across from me and one boat to the side had a number of women sitting in chairs on the foredeck all drinking and chatting. Among them were not the boat's owner and his wife. I talked with the group briefly and they told me that one of them was the sister of the owner and that the others were friends having a little "girl time". Later, as I pulled a water hose over to the fill plate to top off my domestic water tanks, I walked past them and one of them said, "Are we going to get to watch you work, or are you getting ready to leave?" After a little joking back and forth I told them I was just waiting for some guests to take a little cruise.
Fast forward to the evening, returning from our cruise as I was setting dock lines, one of the women -probably about 50 and very nice looking, came off the houseboat and walked over toward me, and asked to talk to me. When I approached her, she said, "I just wanted to ask if you are single?" I hesitated a second just because I wasn't sure of she was serious sort just really intoxicated, since they all appeared to have been drinking all day. I finally said, "I am, in fact."
She responded that "One of the girls is single and we were just wondering if you'd like to keep her company?" Now, I didn't know which of them she meant, and while she was great looking and one of the other women was much younger and not likely to be looking for someone my age, the other three were just not at all attractive to me. I only know one way to find out, and I figured I could escape easily, so I told her that after my guests and I had dinner and they left, if they were still on deck I'd stop over and have a beer with them.
A couple of hours later and it was dark. I walked by guests back to shore, and as I returned noticed that the women were no longer on deck. I didn't mind since I didn't think her approach on behalf of another woman had much promise. I went aboard my board, turned on the TV and made myself a drink. I had been watching an old movie for probably a half hour or so when I heard the transom door close. When I got to the salon door to see who was visiting, it was blondie from earlier.
I invited her in and to have a seat, and offered her a drink, in the midst of which she said, "I thought you were going to stop over.?" I told her that I noticed no one on deck and assume that they might be settling in for the night. She told me that they sort of were, and that two of the girls had left to go back home, while the others were going to spend the night.
Among those who had left was the single woman, but she told me I was still welcome to come over. I jokingly said, "Well, I guess I'm not going to get luck tonight!" She leaned toward me and said, "What makes you think that?"
