Well, the name comes from King Candaules, who exposed his wife to his servant. It didn't end well for the King.
But the rest, about no one wanting to see the male exhibitionist, pretty much rings true. I'd be willing to be more adventurous if I was more likely to get approval rather than laughed at, shamed, or arrested.
