You bring up a very good point. I chatted with him a few days later just make sure he was ok, and he started apologizing again. I told him there was nothing to apologize for and that my wife was ok with it. We talked for about half an hour and when we finished up, he expressed his appreciation for my talking the time to talk it out with him. He seemed cool with it after we were done.
