Just a suggestion.... I have had drives fail to boot up for me as well and this is what I have done to get them going long enough to back up. Remove the drive from the computer but keep the cables connected, turn the computer on and give the drive a light or sometimes not so light tap on the side (DO NOT HIT THE COVER OR EXPOSED ELECTRONICS OF THE DRIVE). You must do this prior to post or windows will not see the drive. Back when I was using Maxtor drives this used to happen to me quite often.
