Actually, All the shrubbery on Fire Island was washed away by Sandy and exposed the beach to the road and Andrew Cuomo shut it down.
Sandy hook was slightly rearranged but it is going strong. Have been there every summer since Sandy with no problem.
The issue with Fire Island for me is that coming from upstate NY I would have to go right through NYC and over several bridges at $15 per bridge to get to the LIE. Leaving at 7PM on a Friday night would take 4 to 5 hours.
Going to Sandy Hook I take 87 to GSP and I can be there in 3 hours with only the road tolls.
