That's pretty reasonable. The closer you are to Old Town, the higher the rates. This year we rented a 2 bedroom house with heated private pool for about $6,000 (2 couples). A few years ago, with 3 couples, we rented a 5 bedroom house with heated pool in a great location for $10K (price has since gone up to $12K).
A lot of people rent in Truman Annex. Generally pretty reasonable, but there is little privacy if you have a pool - and some of the pools are shared between multiple houses.
If you want to stay at a hotel, The Hyatt on Front street is an excellent location. I think it was about $1,200 for a week back in 2007. La Concha on Duval is way too expensive. Other hotels on Duval are dumps.
