Very true.
Directors would routinely compose a shot with more material than was meant to be seen. There might have been images at the top or bottom or extreme left or right that were not meant ot be shown. These were covered when the film was matted for release.
When subjected to pan and scan for 4x3 (say, for television release) the matts were opened up and the film run through the pan & scan process-- that's where you see the material that was never meant to be shown.
This film is a great example of that--
In the original, actress Nancy Kovac is shot in the back, as she arches up, her pantyhosed ass comes out of her shirt. You didn't see that far down in the theatre. But you might have caught it on television down through the years.
