Nothing new
When my wife tried the smooth style back in the seventies it was not at all common. She did not shave but used some depleting cream, which had the advantage of not causing a rash and when it grew back is was not stubbly. So smooth meant smooth and as a summer fashion it was lovely even when she went to a naturist beach, where she was a hit.
