Many thanks to Geordie10 for the great photos. Some of the posed photos from Oceania were taken by Captain Francis R. Barton in New Guinea during the period from 1899 to 1908. The women were not shaved specifically for the photos. Like the South American Indians and other tribes from wet tropical climates, the women normally remove their pubic hair as a matter of traditional custom. The photos were taken for serious anthropologic purposes to illustrate the traditional tattoo designs. Cpt. Barton would sometimes touch up the tattoos to make them show up better in the photos, but he did not shave the models.
