When We Lived in Manila in the Early 1980s
I was a consular officer at the American Embassy. The red light district of Ermita was just one block away from the main gate. Whenever a new officer arrived, male or female, during their first week there, we would take them to one of the girlie bars (usually the one that was owned by a former U.S. Marine) and, on a second night, to one of the tamer strip clubs. Because so many of the bar girls ended up marrying G.I.s and applying for immigrant visas, we called it "doing field research". Those of us who were married would always invite our wives to the strip clubs (so as to assuage any of their concerns of inappropriate behavior) and I never saw one who didn't have a good time watching the dancers perform their routines.
