Z --- zoetrope
A mid-victorian toy meant to animate painted pictures, in a rotating bowl or drum with slits opposite sequential images opposite the slits in the interior. The images below (from the 1880s), can easily be animated in a zoetrope.
The third image is an animation as it would be viewed in a zoetropic device.
The zoetrope is the earliest step in the development of motion pictures.
