And to do things properly in your situations you really also need to use flash. Many of the fails that Tonto has posted on this thread would be successes with the use of extra light from a flash. A large accessory flash. If you're committed to the equipment you have now I highly recommend that you go find some Tonto-like park situations where there's much more light on your subjects.
