I guess things went wrong because you did not communicate fully with your partners, before the evening, what your intentions and hopes were. Nothing beats openness and honesty and often nothing is harder to achieve.
Glad to hear that you are all still friends though. I hope you have talked since the evening. Technically, it was **** and that is always nasty. No excuses.
