1) Using manual auto-leveling works better. (skips some of the rainbow effect.
2) Layering over original pic helps to decrease color disparity.
3) I tend to cheat a little. And add a sample of the more transparent skin onto the less transparent skin. (low opacity, usually 5-10%.) This helps the auto-level to reveal a little more.
4) Low resolution film grain pics are not good sample's.
