After reading several posts, I wanted to share my experience at Sauna Van Egmond. This was my first time in a nude coed sauna... and I should also mention that I'm an American male in his late 20's. Let me share the basics:
- Went on a Monday evening in Oct 2015, I expected few people but found a surprisingly large amount of people (not a bad thing), maybe just an anomaly for a Monday
- I'd read that most saunas have age ranges all over. I would say I didn't see anyone older than mid 40's. A majority of the people were in their 20's-30's, perhaps a ratio of 60:40 Women/Men.
- Most everyone there comes with a group of friends or happens to be a couple. It gets kind of lonely/isolating feeling if you go alone (as I did). Only knowing English didn't help, but people were polite/friendly.
*** Okay, here's the biggest difference I experienced. As an average American red-blooded male, I've just been conditioned to associate nudity with sex. Not something I can really control. Well, I researched before I went about what the etiquette is if you get an erection. The general response on forums is, "Don't worry, you won't get one", not helpful advice or even "advice".***
- So, within minutes of entering the facility, I saw at least a dozen (attractive) college-aged girls, nude of course. I immediately averted my eyes, but I already had a full-on erection. I immediately covered myself with the towel, but at least 20 people probably saw me at full mast before I could cover.
- The girls walked by (probably knowing they had some part in the matter) but were smiling and clearly not taking offense *phew*. A dutch couple in their 30's who'd seen me and chatted friendly with me. They said, "We bet you're American, aren't you", we all laughed. They assured me that these things "come up" once in a while and it is okay/accepted. After all, I wasn't a creepy gawker. They recommended a dip in the cold pool, which helped.
*** Just when I thought I was relaxing 20 minutes later, I saw more young attractive girls and the same thing happened. I covered up and cold-pooled it. Another 30ish minutes later, it happened again. *To reiterate, I was NOT gawking or fantasizing about anyone*.
**I ended up staying there for about 5-6 hours since I couldn't relax and enjoy myself until the problem was solved. After the 3rd erection, I just stopped wrapping a towel around me since everyone had seen it by now. I would just go to the ice pool each time. Choose to believe this or not, but over a 4-hour period, I had had about nine erections. No one really said anything to me about it because I hope/assume they knew it wasn't intentional and moreover that I was ice-bathing each time.
**I do wonder if most women there were offended, flattered, or just neutral about my overactive American sex drive. Anyway, by the 4-hour mark, a member of the staff wanted to speak to me. He very politely said that he'd "noticed me getting overly excited and that it might make others uncomfortable". I'm not sure if anyone had complained to him about me or whether he wanted to intervene before someone may complain. He politely suggested that I come back another day/time and offered me a refund.
I told him that I was leaving Netherlands tomorrow and that I couldn't come back another day. My plan was to wait for more young women to eventually leave as the evening went on, so I could actually enjoy the experience! But irregardless, in more polite wording, he still asked me to leave. =(
**So... yes, (albeit under very unusual circumstances) this is how to get kicked out of a nude coed sauna without ever gawking or making a pass at anyone.** I do wonder if this a bigger problem with younger American males like myself than any other demographic.
So, was my experience good? I'd say 'yes'. If nothing else, it gave me a story to tell. I'm sure my eyes were heavily thanking me for the experience. It sucks that I didn't get the full experience during my one chance there. I still don't know how I feel about getting *politely* kicked out. Whether or not the gentleman thought I was trying to "will myself" to get aroused somehow, I took the appropriate measure each time to fix it.
Surely most adults, male and female from any country must know that these things are involuntary. Was it justifiable to be asked to leave? Thoughts?
