Great Aunt
My great aunt (my grandmother's sister) lived out in the country in a house that was uphill from a smaller home just below. That family had 8 children in a 2 bedroom home that had been a tenant farm house on a much larger farm. Some evenings the entire family--parents and kids from 6 to 16, I guess---would come out in the back yard and they would dip water from the well and wash in it. My great aunt forbid us from going down there to peek --and told me the father would shoot anyone caught peeking--but I could clearly see them in the yard from about 100 yards. I would sneak out and look from her property but I couldn't see much but I even brought friends along when I was about 11 or 12. About all you could tell from that distance was who had reached puberty from the patch of pubic hair and who had not.
They did this year-round---but in the colder months when the days were shorter, they would be doing it in the dark. The summer days would stay daylight until almost 9 so they bathed in the daylight. Each person would soap themselves up then someone else would pour a bucket of water over them---it was a quick bath and happened once or twice a week. The great aunt lived about 8 miles from town so I never went to stay overnight just with my parents to visit and sometimes take her a meal. I would guess I caught the family bathing about 5 or 6 times before I left for college. The kids went to school with me but I didn't really know them.
I just thought it strange because my family was so strict about nudity in the home.
