Default Chapter 3

Kimmy made it to the end of the boardwalk without further encounters. Here, she could ascend the steep incline and be at the edge of the park. From there, it was a 10 minute walk to her house through downtown, or a 20-30 minute walk through the residential areas.
She dashed out from under the boardwalk, heading the direct route first. She surprised a handful of park goers, but was away before they could really react.
She turned the corner and crouched behind a storefront stand to look at the street. Even though this was the end of the town’s main drag, it still had a good number of people walking up and down it. She realized that the residential roads were going to be a better way to go.
She doubled back through the park. This time, some of the park goers reacted. Some hooted, some shook their head disparagingly. One said “Forget something, honey?”
But she turned on to a residential street before anybody could do more.
The brisk walk through the streets was hair-raising, with Kimmy jumping at every sound. But the weather was so hot people were either indoors or elsewhere, not hanging out on the street.
She ran into her front door the moment she saw it.
And found her house dark. She tried a light switch. Nothing.
She remembered from the news that the sudden heat wave was causing a lot of blackouts. Looks like it was her turn.
She went to her washing machine to get the clothes she left, but found that the power had gone out while it was mid cycle. The lid was locked in place. She beat on it, pried on it, pressed all the buttons, but nothing.
Well, the power would come back at some point.
She went to the kitchen to get a drink, she was terribly thirsty. After that, she made herself a quick snack, and had eaten most of it, when there was a knock at the door.
At the second knock, a voice called “Police Department, is there anyone home?”
Her throat became dry. She froze in her chair. Were they here to arrest her?
On shaky legs, she went to the front door, and opened it a crack. “Y- yes?”
“Good afternoon, miss. There were some complaints about a streaker in the neighborhood. Do you mind if I ask you some questions?"
"Um...o..ok."
The officer stared at her. “Would you like to step outside - or may I come in?”
Kimmy blushed as she stepped outside, covering herself.
The officer blushed and gulped. "If you're in the middle of something you can take a moment to get some clothes ..."
"Um.. all my clothes are locked in the washer and I can’t get to them!"
"Umm, would you happen to be the streaker we've received calls about?"
“Well um... I might be but.. like.. I got trapped outside in the nude!”
"I see." The officer cleared his throat. "There have been - numerous complaints about your – behavior. You are not under arrest, but it would be best if you could come down to the station to make a statement. Umm ... when you get some clothes, I guess"
"I couldn’t help it! I got caught outside! I can’t get to any of my clothes!"
"I'm sure you had compelling reasons, but I'm going to need you to save it for the statement. Umm, when do you think you can get something on?"
“ I don’t have anything!”
"Uhh, let me call this in to dispatch. You can wait inside."
Kimmy nodded and hid behind the door. After a few minutes, she heard a knock again. She peeked out.
The officer showed her one of those thick blankets they give to people when they pull them out of rivers and such. "There are a number of very angry complaints about you. They want you down at the station ASAP to settle this. Can you put this on and ride with me, please?"
Kimmy took the coarse woolen blanket through the crack in the door, and wrapped it around herself. It felt very rough on her skin. She stepped outside, letting the officer guide her into the cruiser, and then they set off. At least the air conditioning in the car was nice.
