We usually full swap, usually same room. We've done separate rooms a few times, but not at a large party, usually when we've been out with another couple.
We've also both gone as singles and then try to find each other later on. Sort of a lifestyle version of Hide and Go Seek.
I should mention that I wasn't the one who removed her costume at the party...
