Well, to me it seems that we tend to cover what juts out the most as it feels vulnerable; guys cover their crotches and women their boobs.
As for their situation, one possibility is that they may be into a bdsm lifestyle and the guy might be their Master and the three being his submissives; seeing how he is covered.
