Suggestion: notification when reading an inactive thread
On some boards* I visit, there is a valuable feature: when reading a thread with no new posts in (for example) 6 months or more, the top of each page has something like

"BEFORE POSTING IN THIS THREAD, PLEASE NOTE - the last new post was 4 years and 9 months ago."
------
(or whatever length it is).
This should alert the newbies (and perhaps not only the newbies...) that a new post should be added only for a GOOD reason, and reduce the occurrence of new members posting "Great topic" to lots and lots of old threads.
