It seems highly unlikely they would have a camera set up or a fancy security system. If they did they probably wouldn't bother leaving a key with you. You could always go over once and just walk around inside without snooping and see if they mention anything about you going in their house. Then just use an excuse along the lines of you thought you might have seen a light or something out of the ordinary and were just checking to make sure everything was fine. All you get busted for is being a good neighbor. Then next time they are gone you will have an idea of what you can get away with.
