Yes, Virtualdub doesn't do WMVs or ASFs because of Microsoft patent mumbo jumbo. However, there are two ways to make a smaller clip from a WMV file.
1. Using Windows Movie Maker, you should be able to do this. Just import your video, move the marker to the start of the place in the video you wish to begin and go into the "Clip" menu and select Start trim point, End trim point.
2. You can also use a program called TMPGENC to convert your file to MPG and then cut the video. You first have to change the file extension from .wmv to .asf and then open it in TMPGENC, convert it and then cut it, or the other way around. I'm not sure if newer versions of TMPGENC still do this, but my version 2.5 does.
