Default Thumbnails: obvious after you've done it the first time

I'm getting set to post for the first time, but I don't want to blitz some poor soul on a dial-up with the blame-fool beginner's gaffe of in-lining a large, un-thumbnailed image.

The "manage attachments" pop-up is straightforward in and of itself, but... if I upload a 500KB JPG, what do I do to make sure that the posting comes up with a thumbnail linked out to it rather than winding up with the article displaying the full image?

Like the subject line says, once someone's posted with thumbnails one time, s/he knows the drill from then on, but in the searching and snooping I've done to date, I haven't been able to dig anything up to tell me how to do it the first time around.

Thanks a bunch!
