Early September can be really good. The hordes have gone and there is a more relaxed atmosphere. However, from mid-month things quieten down really quickly and particularly if the weather isn't the best. By the end of the month, most of the bars & restaurants will be either shut or preparing to do so. There's a real end of season feel about the place that I personally wouldn't recommend.
