Go a bit further; who lives in Afghanistan? Afghans.
Who lives in Russia? Russians.
Who lives in Britain? Brits.
OK then who lives in Pakistan? Pakis.
To begin with, the word is artificial. Once upon a time the Islamics controled the entire sub-continent, the "Mogul" empire. Even the Indian national monument, the Taj Mahali, is an Islamic construction. To cut an unbelievably long story short, when Jenna, the first Paki president was looking for a name for his war ridden country (thanks to the Brit occupation and I can tell you some stories there which makes Auschwitz look like a Holiday camp - amongs other things, trains a quarter of a mile long pulled by four locomotives, loaded up with corpses and "a present from India" painted on the wagons) he chose Pakistan for the following reason:
P - Punjab
A - Afghan frontier
K - Kashmir
and finally
Istan - from Baluchistan; all which go to make up the four principal provinces.
The only trouble is, they hate each other (East Pakistan, or Bangladesh, was the first to split) and the only thing holding the rest of the country together is their comon hatred of India, which IS an offensive word. They call it Hindustan for an excellent reason which would take up half a page of explanation. There's a civil war going on between them all which, curiously, never gets mentioned in the news even though it's not far off from the war in Syria. Count on at least 40 deaths a day.
Nip along to your local Paki restaurant and get chatting with the guys in there. They all probably know someone who's in hospital in the UK after stepping on a mine back home, but one thing I can assure you is that none of them consider the expression "Paki" to be offensive. They might even let you watch ARY, or Zee TV, on their set in the back room because they like to make friends and hospitality is a n°1 priority if you're interested in their lifestyle.
Can't the Brits get over the fact that Harold Wilson is dead even though his "political correctiveness" is still thriving on your stupidity.
(When you're in the Paki restaurant, ask for a plate of "Moggy). The word slipped into the English language to mean "cat" but the Paki word means "Chicken." Somebody probably got ripped-off somewhere in the past).
If you want to know more about Pakis, don't hesitate to call me, and there's nothing "offensive" in what I say.
