Default Reducing photo file size

I've downloaded some fine photos from the site and found that they were 600KB or larger AND a good portion of the photo is the background (bedroom walls, outdoor scene, etc.). Well, I want to look at the nude girl spreading her legs, not the wallpaper in the background, so I crop the file. I have Microsoft Office Photo Manager. I opened these files in that program, crop out the superfluous background and cut the file size in half or better. While file size is not a big thing with today's hard drives, a large file does take a little longer to open. Such cropping also allows more of the "good" part to appear on the screen in as large a form as possible.
