Well, if by "sent them bankrupt" you mean "bought an airline with overpaid staff and an aging poorly maintained fleet, then were bailed out by the NZ government while the Australian government refused to help", then yes Air NZ sent them bankrupt.
The wikipedia page sheds some light - not that I'm biased either...
