Step 3 can be any number of things. Each image is different, and can be handled in a number of ways. You will need to draw on your experience to determine the best approach from here.

However, one approach that might work here is to adjust the hue and/or brightness levels.

With the area still highlighted, adjust setting until you've come as close as you can to the original hue and/or brightness of the surrounding area.


I've found that if you're dealing with people's skin tones, you can desaturate greens, blues, cyans, and sometimes magentas. Then you can concentrate on the reds and yellows. That's what I did here...
